British Columbia has had a very long and bountiful history of gemstone mining dating back up to a hundred years ago.  The government has a public accessible database of any claims made since then.  Since mines are really never actaully depleted so many of these claims will still have desirable stones present for anyone willing to look for them. In 2005 we compiled a list of claims made for gemstones. Many of these claims will have lapsed and the public is permitted to explore them. Others may have been reclaimed or not allowed to lapse, always check if an area is under claim before prospecting it.

Asbestos and Jade in Cassiar.pdf
From Wikipedia:
Cassiar is a ghost town in British Columbia, Canada. It was a small company-owned asbestos mining town located in the Cassiar Mountains of Northern British Columbia. After forty years of operation, starting in 1952, the mine was unexpectedly forced to close in 1992. The closure was driven by a combination of factors including diminished demand for asbestos and expensive complications faced after converting from an open-pit mine to an underground mine. Most of the contents of the town, including a few houses, were sold off and trucked away. There is also seasonal jade mining from the Cassiar waste dumps
